Lanzhou University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, holding an important strategic position in the national higher education landscape and enjoying significant influence and a good reputation both at home and abroad.

The university was founded in 1909, originally established as Gansu Law and Politics School, the first modern higher education institution in Northwest China. In 1928, it was expanded and renamed Lanzhou Zhongshan University. In 1946, it was renamed National Lanzhou University. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, during the adjustment of higher education institutions, it was designated as one of the country's 14 comprehensive universities. Since the reform and opening-up, it has been successively selected for the "Project 211" and "Project 985" initiatives. In 2002 and 2004, respectively, the Gansu Grassland Ecology Research Institute and Lanzhou Medical College were incorporated into and returned to Lanzhou University. In 2017, Lanzhou University was selected as a Class A university for the construction of world-class universities. Currently, the university has two campuses: Chengguan and Yuzhong. Over more than 110 years of development, Lanzhou University has remained committed to the western region and dedicated to serving the country, embarking on a path to create a distinctive, world-class university with Chinese characteristics in an economically underdeveloped area. It has created renowned “Lanzhou phenomena” such as the chemistry department producing “one discipline with nine academicians,” geosciences featuring “three generations of teachers and students pioneering the three poles of the Earth,” the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ “Lanzhou University Legion,” and the Longi-Lanzhou University partnership, all well recognized at home and abroad.
